Ștefan Dărăbuș National Director
Hope and Homes for Children Romania

There is a number that should keep you from sleeping. One hundred thousand. That's how many children were locked inside Romania's orphanages nearly 30 years ago, when we began the effort to close them all. Not orphans - let's stop using that word. Ninety-seven percent of them had a mother or a father somewhere. They were the children of poverty, of desperation, of a system that found it easier to warehouse a human being than to help a family survive.

This year, Ion Holban - the largest of these warehouses, a place through which more than 450 children passed in just a decade - closed. Not because history corrected itself. It closed because someone, one person, with a name you will most likely never know, donated enough to keep a social worker in the field for one more month.

Because someone else redirected 3.5% of their taxes, probably between two sips of morning coffee, without ever realizing that their signature would become the hinge through which a young woman named Flavia opened the door of an institution, stepped into her own apartment, and passed her university entrance exam, taking her life into her own hands. Six institutions closed in 2025. More than 70 children returned to their families. Another 1,200 children never entered the system at all, because someone, somewhere, decided that a child they would never meet deserved a fraction of their attention. Today, only a few hundred children remain in institutions in Romania. From one hundred thousand.

This arc did not bend on its own.

Let's be precise about what nearly three decades of work have actually produced. Not a perfect system - anyone who tells you that is selling you illusions. But it has produced nearly 70,000 children who are not in institutions today - children who statistically, inevitably, would have been there if nothing had been done.

It has produced a grandmother in Iași County who brought her three grandchildren back from state care because a social worker sat long enough at her kitchen table for the grandmother to believe it was possible. It has produced more than 130 family homes where 12 children - not 200 - share a roof and call it "home." This "home" is a decision we make about one another.

But here is what this work has not yet produced: the end. A few institutions are still open. Inside them, right now, there are children who will go to bed in rooms with many others, supervised by someone working in shifts. That child does not need your admiration for what has been achieved so far. They need your name on a donation, your tax redirection, your refusal to look away.

The last orphanage in Romania will not close by inertia.
It will close because of you.

In 12 months, from the story of HOME to the door that opens for children

615,000 € raised in 12 months

In April 2024, together with David Popovici, Amalia Enache, Mihai Morar, Marius Manole, and Alexandru Tomescu, we launched the most ambitious fundraising campaign so far for children in orphanages. Our goal was to bring together the largest community of supporters and to build, from the ground up, a family home for 11 children with moderate and severe special needs.

Our ambassadors succeeded in mobilizing thousands of people. Together, they raised over €615,000 and proved that when people of goodwill join forces, anything is possible.

Our ambassadors succeeded in mobilizing thousands of people. Together, they raised over €615,000 and proved that when people of goodwill join forces, anything is possible.

16,000 donors and 28 companies joined efforts, and in November 2024 we began the home construction for the 11 children who need support, love, and a place to call HOME.

Hope Stories Gala

We celebrated the power of collective solidarity through the "HOME Ambassador. When we build a house, we shape a child's future".

The five Foundation Ambassadors shared with the public moving stories from their own world around the idea of Home - what Home means to them, what shaped and safeguarded the fulfillment of their childhood dreams, and which people or moments inspired them to become the professionals that an entire country admires today.

At the beginning of December, the family home was completed. We marked the fulfillment of a promise - the promise that no child should grow up without safety, without love, without a place where someone says, "Welcome home." The 11 children now have what many take for granted, but for them is truly extraordinary: a room of their own, a bed, a table where someone asks, "How was your day?" and a voice that says, "I'm here."

We thank our ambassadors David PopoviciAmalia EnacheAlexandru TomescuMarius ManoleMihai Morar! We also thank our partners, the authorities, the donors, and everyone who put a piece of their soul into this project. But above all, we thank the children. They are the reason. They are the courage. They are the future.

The story of the five new homes

In 2025, we continued the process of closing placement centers by opening a total of five family homes, offering children a safe, stable environment close to that of a real family. The new homes were opened in Rupea (with the support of the La Primul Bebe community), Târgu Frumos (with the support of Inditex), in the communes of Aroneanu and Miroslava in Iași County (with the help of Kaufland România), and in district 5, Bucharest (through the "HOME Ambassador" campaign). Each of the houses was designed to meet the specific children needs and to support their emotional and social development.

These family homes represent more than just living spaces - they are true "homes," where children receive individualized care, build healthy attachment relationships, and have access to education and community services.

Through these openings, Hope and Homes for Children takes another important step toward its goal of ensuring that every child has the right to grow up in a family or in a family-like environment.

~350 children

are still living in the 20 orphanages that remain in Romania

In 2025, we closed 6 orphanages. In 27 years of work in support of vulnerable children, we have contributed to the closure of 81 placement centers, completing the deinstitutionalization process in 11 counties across the country.

Approximately 350 children are still living in the 20 orphanages that remain in Romania.

From institution to home: the benefits of life in a family home

A stable and safe living environment

Children live in a typical house, in a space that provides safety, privacy, and predictability, not in an institution.

Healthy attachment relationships

They have consistent adult role models alongside them, who offer care, affection, and emotional support, all essential for their development.

Individualized care

Each child is individually recognized, heard, and supported in line with their unique needs, pace of development, and potential.

A sense of "home" and belonging

Children are involved in everyday life at home, help with household activities, and experience a true sense of belonging within a family.

Access to quality education

They attend community schools and receive support for integration and academic achievement.

Access to healthcare and recovery services

They receive appropriate medical care and, where needed, psychological or therapeutic support.

Community integration

They grow up in direct contact with the local community, take part in social and cultural activities, and build natural relationships with other children.

Development of independent living skills

They learn to manage daily responsibilities, make decisions, and prepare for adult life.

Respect for children's rights

The family home provides a framework that supports each child's dignity, voice, and best interests.

"Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the effort, dedication, and care you have put into everything you have done. Through your actions, you have managed to bring joy, emotion, and hope, and that means a great deal to me. I am truly grateful for the attention and kindness you have shown".

4 new family homes

In 2026, we will complete another family home and begin the construction of three new ones in Gorj and Buzău counties.

The story of good deeds in guitar notes

We spent the beginning of autumn surrounded by good energy, together with music lovers at the Guitar Meeting Festival. We prepared an interactive experience for festival participants - young and old alike, music enthusiasts or simply people looking for fun - drawn from the "Finish the Lyrics" game. Those who accepted the challenge and stepped on our stage, as well as those who supported them from the audience, enjoyed snacks and fresh fruit provided by our partner: Kaufland. The event was an opportunity to bring together music, emotion, and acts of generosity.

This moment of joy also translated into tangible support for children: the donations raised help children from vulnerable communities in Sibiu, enabling them to remain at home with their families, away from the risk of separation.

We thank our partner, Kaufland România, for their involvement and generosity! They provided us with a stage where music, emotion, and solidarity came together in a single voice, once again demonstrating the power of community to change lives.

The Story of Gifted Children

Adelina, Adriana, Alexandrina, Alin, Ana, Ana-Maria, Andrada, Andreea, Andreea R., Bogdan, Daria, Daria D., Darius, Dimitra, Doriana, Elena, Emanuel, Gabriela, Ilaria, Ioana, Ionuț, Iuliana, Laurențiu, Mădălina, Natașa, Paul, Paula, Rareș, Sara, Sarah, Sorina, Teodora, Tudor, Valentin, and Vlad are the 35 DAR scholars of the fourth edition of the program launched in 2022 — a program born from the belief that no child should have to give up their dreams due to a lack of resources:

Adelina Adriana Alexandrina Alin Ana Ana-Maria Andrada Andreea Andreea R. Bogdan Daria Daria D. Darius Dimitra Doriana Elena Emanuel Gabriela Ilaria Ioana Ionuț Iuliana Laurențiu Mădălina Natașa Paul Paula Rareș Sara Sarah Sorina Teodora Tudor Valentin Vlad

Behind each name lies a story of courage, determination, and hope - of children who choose to move forward despite the obstacles in their path.

Their academic, artistic, and athletic achievements, attained despite material hardships, are true lessons in resilience, hard work, and passion for us. The DAR scholarships represent not only financial support, but also trust, encouragement, and the opportunity to discover their full potential. Through this program, we stand by their side on the journey toward the future they dream of, offering them both the resources and the opportunity to be seen, valued, and supported in fulfilling their destiny.

The story of Ionuț's medals

2.000 € the value of a DAR scholarship / year

Within the DAR Scholarships program, the value of a scholarship goes far beyond the annual amount of €2,000. It opens doors, creates opportunities, and gives children the chance to push beyond their own limits - to learn, to explore, and to grow. More than financial support, the scholarship is a promise: that their talent is recognized and supported, and that their dreams can become a reality.

Each name in the program carries a story of courage, determination, and remarkable talent. We choose to stand by these children, to support them with trust, and to provide the guidance they need to move forward on a path they have already begun with passion, perseverance, and talent.

The first camp of the fourth edition of the DAR Scholarships

Summer 2025 brought us together with the DAR #4 scholarship recipients - children and young people who carry within them big dreams, courage, and great hope. We gathered in a camp that quickly became a place of connection and inspiration, where we shared smiles, stories, and thoughts about who we are and the path each of us dreams of following.

Within the program, the DAR scholarship recipients enjoyed outdoor experiences at Edenland – treetop climbing, archery, and mini golf, as well as escape room activities, bowling, and an open-air concert.

Through games, workshops, and educational activities, we created a space where we discovered together the value of authenticity and the power of vulnerability, reminding ourselves how important it is to have by your side people who share the same values and passions.

During the camp, the DAR scholarship recipients enjoyed outdoor experiences at Edenland:

Treetop climbing Archery Mini golf Escape room activities Bowling Open-air concert

A particular focus was placed on meetings with successful individuals, aimed at inspiring participants and offering authentic role models: the scholars had the opportunity to engage in dialogue with the artist Ana Baniciu and Olympic rowing champion Marian Florin Enache, who shared their professional journeys, the challenges they faced, and the importance of hard work and self-confidence.

The financial education workshop delivered by Banca Transilvania, offered to the young participants practical tools designed to support them in building a responsible and sustainable future. The dental hygiene workshop organized by the Romanian College of Dental Practitioners provided essential information for a healthy lifestyle.

The DAR Scholarship Gala is the place where stories of courage, determination, and perseverance come to life, showing that excellence is built step by step

At the end of the year, we reunited to celebrate the scholars at the DAR Scholarships Gala, held at the National Bank of Romania. Excellence was recognized by some of Romania's champions themselves – David Popovici and members of the Olympic Rowing Team: Florin and Maria Lehaci, Florin Enache, Magdalena Rusu, Mihai Chiruță and Amalia Bereș.

David Popovici offered the scholars medals from his own career achievements as a personal gift. As ambassador of the Hope and Homes for Children Foundation, he has been closely involved with the scholarship program for several years. This year, he dedicated his birthday to them, raising over €107,000 for the next generation of exceptional children.

The evening was defined by the power of performance and the sincerity of stories about the sometimes fragile journey that leads to success. It concluded with a truly special moment: one of the scholarship recipients, a student at the "Dinu Lipatti" National College of Arts, performed alongside AMI (Andreea Moldovan), her favorite artist, who surprised by joining her on stage.

The story of young people from the child protection system who, at the age of 18, are left to face the world on their own

Nicolae is a student at the National University of Arts in Iași. For him, his passion for painting is more than just an interest - it is a form of searching and self-discovery.

He spends countless hours studying the works of his favorite great masters—Rembrandt, John Singer Sargent, and Diego Velázquez - trying to look beyond the surface of their paintings and understand the subtle play of light and the power of emotion captured in every detail. For him, these works are not just images, but living lessons about patience, discipline, and artistic sensitivity.

He aims to build a solid foundation based on the discipline and refinement of classical art, convinced that only by truly understanding the past can he create something authentic in the present. His dream is to bring together two worlds - academic tradition and contemporary expression - into a unique visual language of his own, where rigorous technique naturally harmonizes with personal experience.

2,602 young people supported in 27 years of activity
82 young individuals with direct support in 2025

In addition to helping them find suitable employment, we place strong emphasis on the emotional and psychological well-being of our beneficiaries. Many of them come from placement centers and have gone through difficult experiences, and the transition to adult life can bring fear and uncertainty. Through our psychological counseling services, we offer them a safe space where they can express their concerns and vulnerabilities, supporting them in better understanding and managing their emotions.

We accompany them throughout the entire integration process, with the goal of providing long-term support. Our intervention also includes assistance in finding housing and managing personal finances responsibly - essential steps toward building an autonomous and stable life.

The story of children who can remain at home, where they belong most

"Mom used to make the best cabbage rolls. She would always be waiting for us with food on the table when we got home from school. We miss her deeply. The house feels empty now."

Aura, Mara, Andrada, and Brândușa lost their mother in the autumn of last year, after a painful battle with cancer. With her passing, the peace of their childhood faded as well. What remains is a deep void, difficult to put into words.

The hardest moment comes after school. The door opens, but their mother is no longer there. The smell of warm food, her gentle smile, and the joy with which she gathered them around the table are now gone. They are at an age when a mother's hugs, guidance, and presence are essential - and her absence is felt in every moment.

The father has been left alone to face all the responsibilities: his daughters, the household, his blind father-in-law, and a life that must be rebuilt without the woman who was the heart of the family. Until recently, he had been working abroad to support his family and improve their home. After losing his wife, he was forced to give it up and return home, to be the support his daughters need now more than ever.

Together, we have taken the first steps toward restoring a sense of safety and normality. We repaired the attic of the house and built a stove in the girls' room, so that the cold would no longer take away their peace and sense of security, especially during the long winter evenings. And so that school does not become a burden, we created a space of their own where they can do their homework - equipped with desks, chairs, shelves for their supplies, and a laptop shared by all the sisters. These may seem like small things, but for them they mean hope and the chance to stay together. And proof that they are not alone, even after the most painful loss.

1,194 children whose institutionalization we prevented in 2025
45,064 children kept at home in 27 years of activity

For 27 years, we have been doing everything in our power to ensure that hardship is no longer the reason that separates a child from their parents. We firmly believe that no child should be separated from their family because of poverty - and every child who remains at home is a victory of community support over helplessness.

Through the program "My family, my all", we have taken on the mission of supporting the most vulnerable - families on the brink of separation. We stand by them to ensure that every child has what truly matters: safety, love, and the presence of their loved ones, without material hardship overshadowing their childhood. To date, we have prevented the institutionalization of 45,064 children.

For every child who smiles happily within their family, we are grateful to: Parfumeriile DouglasEncoraNapolactGlovo x Coca Cola HBCBanca Mondială.

The story of children who dream of returning home

"Home is the best place"

Their lives changed completely once they entered the child protection system. The siblings were separated - some placed with foster families, others in an emergency reception center - and the longing for home became a constant presence in their hearts. They went through difficult moments, but they always wished to be together again, to feel once more the warmth and safety of a family. Their mother never stopped fighting for them, always carrying them in her thoughts and in her heart.

Today, they live in a modest room, with improvised beds and a kitchen without furniture, but they are not alone - we stand by them to make the joy of being reunited complete. We provide construction materials to help them expand their home, as well as food, hygiene products, and new beds, so that each day can be more comfortable and secure.

Their mother has found her balance again, and the children wish for nothing more than to stay at home - together, where they feel loved and protected.

In 2025, we managed to reunite 71 children with their families. Now they sleep peacefully, in a home that gives them both roots and wings.

When we close an orphanage, the real magic only begins when a child returns Home. It is the moment when, after years of longing, loneliness, and unspoken questions, fear melts away. They step into the place where they truly belong, and every glance, every smile, every embrace is a sign that they are exactly where they should be.

The children who return home give us the courage to never give up. They remind us that every soul waiting in silence and loneliness deserves the chance for a day when the doors of home open and their parents' arms are there to welcome them. So far, we have supported 2,034 children in returning to their families. They inspire us to keep going, to fight for every moment in which a family can be reunited again, for every heart that can once more feel the warmth of home.

Solidarity stories: When our shopping becomes children support

This year, for every pair of children's glasses sold, donated 50 lei to provide a vulnerable child with a warm and safe home.

Turned every Make-Up Advent Calendar or Men's Advent Calendar into a gift with impact, donating 10 lei to help children stay close to their families.

Between December 10–24, donated 10 lei for every payment made with the Direct Card, supporting the children in our care.

Also in December, launched a campaign where 1 leu from the sale of each product in the Gingerbread range was directed to our programs.

Donated 1 leu for each of the four dedicated drinks sold between December and February, later matching the total amount raised to double the impact.

During the Holidays, for every Glovo order that includes a Coca-Cola product, the company donates 0.50 RON, up to a maximum of 14,000 EUR — funds converted into food packages for over 250 beneficiaries.

"You Eat, We Give"JW Marriott, Courtyard, Moxy, Marmorosch

1 euro from every lunch and dinner served in September and October was directed to our organization.

Directed 10% of the value of each ride to the Child-Parent Separation Prevention program. Each journey thus became an outstretched hand to children in need, helping them stay close to those who love them, in the place where they belong most - HOME.

The story doesn't stand still. It pedals forward.

We were thrilled to take part in the 10th and 11th editions of the Marriott Cycling Challenge - over 20 hours of cycling for children in need of a family! Alongside more than 600 participants, and under the guidance of World Class Romania instructors, we turned every kilometer into hope. This way, we helped contribute to the construction of one of the five family homes needed to close the last orphanages in Romania.

We thank the organizers – Marriott Worldwide Business Councils Hungary & South East Europe, through JW Marriott Bucharest Grand Hotel and World Class România. We also extend our gratitude to the participating companies: Porsche FinanceNespressoDigi RomaniaSystematicAgricoverEncora and Kaufland România.

The story of childhood celebrated on two wheels

JUNE 1 – ON BICYCLES turned Baia Mare into a city of childhood, pure joy, and wheels pedaling in unison. Children's laughter, parents' enthusiasm, and the community's energy filled the streets, with every pedal telling a story of freedom, play, and time spent together.

Over 700 people - children, parents, grandparents, and friends - chose to celebrate Children's Day exactly the way childhood feels best: outdoors, on bicycles, with big smiles, during Bike Fest, a weekend that brought us closer together.

We sincerely thank our friends at Maramureș Bike and Interact Baia Mare for a heartfelt partnership that brought generations together and created precious memories!

The story of celebrations that become gifts

In a world where a birthday usually means cake, candles, and the joy of being with loved ones, our friends chose to give this day a deeper meaning. They turned their birthday into a gesture of solidarity for the most vulnerable children, forgoing gifts and inviting their loved ones to support our programs through donations.

In addition, in 2025, David Popovici, for the third year in a row, chose to turn his birthday into a gesture of solidarity, dedicating his special day to the DAR program scholars and inviting his fans to replace traditional gifts with donations. For him, achievement is not just about medals and records, but also about the responsibility to support those at the beginning of their journey, who have talent and ambition but not always the necessary resources. He emphasized that no champion succeeds alone, that behind every success there is a community, and that applause can take a tangible form when it is transformed into financial support for training, equipment, courses, or competition participation.

1,500 people mobilized
107,000 € raised for the scholars

His initiative demonstrated that generosity, when inspired by an authentic role model, can provide real opportunities and profoundly change the trajectory of lives.

On his 44th birthday, Mihai Morar set out to raise one thousand euros for each year of his life to offer the children in the family home built in District 5, a year without worries - including good food, rehabilitation therapies, and psychological counseling. He wanted Marcu to continue his painting course, Horațiu to explore photography, and Antonio to play football on a proper field. He succeeded in raising 45,000 euros, ensuring that the 12 children in their new home could live with dignity, balance, and everything they need to grow up happy, safe, and confident in their future.

By their choice, all those who decided to donate their birthday gave more than material support: they offered opportunities, confidence, and hope. They showed that true joy does not lie in what you receive, but in the Good you pass on.

We are deeply grateful for their generosity and the example they set!

The story of involvement: when companies become support

Our partners have shown that social responsibility gains true meaning when it turns into concrete actions with real impact in the lives of the children and young people we support. Through their direct involvement, companies have contributed to creating warmer, safer, and more welcoming environments for the children in our care.

Dedicated volunteer days brought together teams of employees who took part in:

Setting up family homes and gardens Assembling furniture Preparing preserves for the cold season Cooking meals for the children Museum visits Nature trips

Beyond the practical support offered in family homes, our partners have brought joy and adventure into the children's lives through recreational and educational experiences. Each different day became a chance to learn through play, build self-confidence, and create beautiful memories filled with laughter and genuine emotions. Therefore, partnerships with companies have shown that involvement goes beyond material support - it can turn into unforgettable moments, full of inspiration and hope.

We thank all our partners who chose to turn values into action and to write, alongside us, the story of a childhood in which every child truly feels that their future matters: Agrii RomâniaBrink's RomâniaConcentrixColonnade Insurance.

The story of the school year start, written together

The school year start is a time of strong emotions, hope, and new beginnings. For some, it brings curiosity and excitement; for others, fear, uncertainty, or the worry that they won't have everything they need.

A prepared backpack, suitable clothes, and the support of those around them can turn this experience into a positive one, giving children the feeling that they are supported and have equal opportunities.

For the children in the care of Hope and Homes for Children, this moment was made possible thanks to the generosity and involvement of our partner companies, who chose to turn the school year start into an experience filled with confidence and joy.

Through their contributions, hundreds of children received fully equipped backpacks with all the supplies needed to start school prepared and motivated. Beyond the items themselves, these gestures carried a powerful message:

"You matter. We believe in you."

For children, a new backpack means more than just supplies - it represents belonging, dignity, and the courage to step confidently into a new school year.

We thank all the companies that chose to be part of this beginning and to contribute to building a stable educational journey for every child: AgricoverNN, The Bridge and Colliers RomâniaHyperfy and Azitrend.

The story of a Christmas when no one was forgotten

Christmas is, for every child, a time of anticipation, dreams, and hope that the magic will reach them too. This year, thanks to the partners who stood by us, we were able to turn that hope into certainty: no child in our programs was forgotten.

Letters from the children in family homes reached Santa Claus, and each received what they wished for most. Every carefully prepared gift meant more than just a surprise under the tree. It was a symbolic embrace, a sign that somewhere, someone had that child in mind. For some, it may have been the first time they felt the full joy of a gift chosen just for them. For all of them, however, it was proof that they are seen, valued, and loved.

We thank all the companies that chose to be part of this story and made possible a Christmas in which every child felt that Santa had come just for them: JW Marriott Bucharest Grand HotelOptical Investment GroupPenny RomâniaAgricoverDB Global TechnologyNagarroLPP Fashion RomâniaBCR Leasing.

The story of success: when impact receives applause

The campaign "HOME Ambassador. When we build a house, we shape a child's future" was more than just a communication and fundraising initiative - it was a testament to our belief that every child deserves to grow up in a family. The awards received at Romania's most important communication, PR, and sustainability competitions were a recognition of our mission and our daily efforts dedicated to children who need support, care, and the chance to have a true home.

Through this campaign, Hope and Homes for Children received:

Gold Community Index Health and Wellbeing category
Gold Civil Society Gala Social Campaigns category
Silver PR Awards — Award for Excellence NGOs category
Bronz Webstock Best Social Good Campaign
Social Impact Hero BIZ Sustainability Awards

The campaign "Set One More Plate at Breakfast" also received recognition:

Bronze Community Index Nutrition & Wellbeing category — alongside Friesland Campina / Napolact
2nd Place Romanian Sustainability & CSR Awards 2025

Each award, in fact, tells the same story: the story of voices that chose not to remain silent and of a community that understood that change is possible. These awards honor us and above all, inspire us to keep raising our voices for the fundamental right of every child to grow up in a family, until each of them has a place that can truly be called "Home."

All the good things we have achieved so far would not have been possible without our partners. They are the ones who stood by us, believed in our ideas, and helped us turn them into real actions with tangible impact.
