imagine a world where children no longer suffer the nightmare of institutionalisation
about 165 children and young adults still survive in orphanages and other hundreds of thousands in extreme poverty, which puts them at high risk of being separated from their parents. stability, independence, identity – values we all want in our lives – are almost unknown concepts for them.
our mission is to close down all orphanages in Romania by 2027. We are working to find a solution for each of the vulnerable children we support, to permanently close down orphanages in Romania and to prevent family breakdown as a result of extreme poverty.

we support families living in extreme poverty to recover and we continuously work with the authorities so that no child ever goes through the trauma of living in an orphanage.

we support children to grow up in stable and loving families, and for those who cannot grow up with their families, we build family homes from scratch, meaning an environment as close as possible to family life.

- 1994 hope and homes for children is a global charity specialised in child protection. The history of the organisation started in 1994, in the UK, in the house of Mark and Caroline Cook.
- 1998 when we started our work in Romania, over 100,000 children were living in orphanages in precarious conditions. We have rethought the child protection system in Romania, putting the child in the foreground.
- 2023 after 25 years of continuous work with families and the authorities, we managed to support almost 42,000 children to remain together with their parents, we closed down 69 orphanages and built 127 family homes for children who could not be reunited with their families.
our programmes in the world
we implement programmes to reform the child protection systems and prevent family breakdown in 30 countries in Europe, Africa and South America, through our own offices or through partner organisations. In Romania, we have been working since 1998.
